Brenda Kulp was a remarkable woman, known not only for her endless kindness, intelligence, and devotion, but also for her incredible resilience and indomitable spirit. Throughout her life, she faced immense challenges, including a rare lung disease known as LAM and, later, ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Despite these battles, Brenda’s dedication and passion never wavered, especially in her work within orthopaedic trauma care, where she made a profound difference in the lives of countless patients, their families, and her colleagues.
Brenda found her true calling in orthopaedic trauma care. Her warm demeanor and unrelenting commitment that she carried with her throughout all of her roles and interactions built a beautiful legacy of lasting contributions, relationships, and memories. She took immense pride in her work with the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) and served with distinction as the Executive Director of the Southeastern Fracture Consortium (SEFC). Through her leadership, Brenda was instrumental in advancing research and innovation in orthopedic trauma care, always driven by a deep commitment to improving patient outcomes and advocating for their needs. Brenda's thoughts were always about how to be of service to others, as she shared ideas for ALS and LAM research in hopes of alleviating the suffering of those diagnosed with these challenging conditions. Even in her final days when few even knew she was ill, Brenda was joyfully responding to countless messages from colleagues assisting with orthopaedic questions they had related to SEFC or ABOS.
The executive directors, board members, and all those associated with SEFC extend their deepest gratitude to Brenda Kulp for her tireless contributions. For over 20 years, her hard work, determination, and visionary leadership have been the driving force behind the SEFC’s continued success. It is with great respect and admiration that we acknowledge the legacy Brenda has left behind—a legacy that her daughter, Lauren Kulp, will continue to uphold, ensuring that Brenda’s passion for research, education, and patient advocacy will live on through the work of the SEFC.

In honor of Brenda’s enduring legacy, the executive directors and board members of SEFC have established the Brenda H. Kulp Lifetime Achievement Award. This award will be presented annually to a member of SEFC who has demonstrated extraordinary accomplishments that are widely recognized for their positive and lasting impact. This award celebrates contributions within the medical or research community in areas related to orthopedic surgery. Look out for more information in the coming months about the nomination process for this inaugural award, to be presented each year at the annual Southeastern Fracture Symposium.
