2023 SEFS Faculty

Scott Broderick, MD
Dr. Scott Broderick is an orthopaedic traumatologist who specializes in severe musculoskeletal injuries and fractures, as well as fractures with complications. He is currently practicing with Spartanburg Regional Health System in Spartanburg, SC. Dr. Broderick will be the welcome speaker at SEFS 2023 and will be moderating the rapid fire case discussions.

Michael Koerner, MD
Dr. Michael Koerner is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon. He has published works in various journals and has presented at conferences across the world. He will be a panelist during the Rapid Fire Case Discussions and will be speaking on Geriatric Femoral Neck Fractures during the Faculty Debates.

Kristoff Reid, MD
Dr. Kristoff Reid is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon at MUSC. He also serves as a member of a Forward Surgical Team in the U.S. Army Reserves, holding the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. His research on fractures and nonunions has been published in scholarly journals and at orthopaedic conferences. He will be a panelist in the Rapid Fire Case Discussions.

Jason Halvorson, MD
Dr. Jason Halvorson is an orthopeadic and orthopaedic trauma surgeon at Atrium Health - Wake Forest Baptist. He treats fractures, trauma, non-unions, pelvic and acetabular surgery, and fracture management. Dr. Halvorson will be presenting Innovations in Hip Fracture Management during the Best Practices and Innovative Techniques Session. He will also be moderating the small group discussion "When things go wrong".

Eben Carroll, MD
Dr. Eben Carroll is an orthopaedic trauma surgeon at Atrium Health - Wake Forest Baptist and a professor of orthopedics at Wake Forest School of Medicine. He is a leader in the field of orthopaedic trauma and has authored over 50 peer reviewed publications and given more than 150 talks nationally and internationally. Dr. Carroll will be presenting on Dual Fixation Constructs for Early Weight Bearing during the Best Practices and Innovative Techniques session.

Russell Norris, MD
Dr. Russell Norris is the assistant program chair for the 2023 Southeastern Fracture Symposium. He is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon practicing in North Carolina for ECU Health. Dr. Norris will be moderating the Surgical Strategy Session and facing off with Dr. Suman Medda on Periprosthetic Proximal Femur Fracture Treatment in the Faculty Debates. Dr. Norris will also be a panelist in the Rapid Fire Case Discussions.

John Floyd, MD
Dr. John Floyd is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon specializing in orthopaedic traumatology and fracture care. He has published in major orthopaedic and trauma medical journals. Dr. Floyd will be presenting on Posterior Malleolus Fractures during the Surgical Strategy Session and will be facing off with Kevin Haddix during the Faculty Debates on "Osteomyelitis in the Unhealed Fracture".

Kevin Phelps, MD
Dr. Kevin Phelps is an orthopaedic surgeon joining us from Atrium Health. Dr. Phelps will present "Dusted Distal Radius Fractures - When to Span the Joint" during the surgical strategy section.

David Weiss, MD
Dr. David Weiss is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon who directs the Orthopaedic Trauma Division at UVA. His research interests include fractures of the proximal and distal tibia. Dr. Weiss will be assuming the presidential role for SEFS for 2023-2025! For SEFS2023, Dr. Weiss is gearing up to moderate the faculty debates and will be speaking about Office Managemnet - Use of a Scribe during the Clinician Health, Wellness, and Career Management Session.

Jonathan Helms, MD
Dr. Jonathan Helms is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon at ECU Health. Dr. Helms will be facing off with Dr. Seth Yarboro during the faculty debates on Syndesmotic Injuries.

Christopher Parks, MD
Dr. Christopher Parks is an orthopaedic surgeon joining us from New Hanover Regional Medical Center, the NHRMC Orthopaedic Specialty Hospital, Wilmington Surgcare, and Brunswick Surgery Center. Dr. Parks is a specialty trained orthopedic trauma surgeon and fracture care specialist, concentrating on fractures and dislocations of the upper extremities, lower extremities, and the pelvis in addition to the care of non-unions, mal-unions and complex fracture conditions. Dr. Parks will be speaking on Periprosthetic Proximal Femur Fractures during the faculty debates.

Seth Yarboro, MD
Seth R. Yarboro, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in treating patients with bone, joint and soft tissue injuries, using traditional, minimally invasive and computer-assisted surgical techniques. Dr. Yarboro will be taking on Dr. Jonathan Helms to debate the treatment of Syndesmotic Injuries during the faculty debates and will be speaking about the transition to attending status during the Clinician Health, Wellness, and Career session.

David Zuelzer, MD
Dr. Zuelzer is an orthopaedic surgeon. He specializes in orthopedic trauma with an emphasis on periarticular fractures of the upper and lower extremities, fractures of the pelvis and acetabulum, periprosthetic fractures, polytrauma and complications of fractures such as nonunions, malunions, and infections. Dr. Zuelzer will be speaking about early hardware failure during the session "When Things Go Wrong"

Robert Harris, MD
Dr. Robert Harris is is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon specializing in orthopaedic trauma surgery and fracture care. Dr. Harris is the director of orthopaedic trauma for the Hughston Clinic at Midtown Medical Center and an orthopaedic surgeon at the Hughston Clinic. Dr. Harris will be presenting on the loss of reduction during the small group discussion session "When things go wrong".

Michael Frisch, MD
Dr. Michael Frisch is an orthopaedic trauma surgeon. Dr. Frisch will be participating in the Rapid Fire Case Discussion on Saturday.

Timothy Oswald, MD
Dr. Timothy Oswald joins us from Wellstar during our Rapid Fire Case Discussions on Saturday. Dr. Oswald is a pediatric orthopedic surgeon and will be leading a session on pediatric ortho for the community to provide up to date guidance for the care of skeletally immature fracture patients.

Christopher Bray, MD
Dr. Christopher Bray is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon specializing in pediatrics at Greenville Health System, Steadman Hawkins Clinic of the Carolinas. He completed fellowships in sports medicine and pediatric orthopaedics at Starship Childrens Hospital in addition to a sports medicine fellowship at Unisports Sports Medicine Clinic in Auckland, NZ. Dr. Bray will be speaking on Pediatric Fractures - When Does the Hardware Come Out? during our pediatric ortho session.

Lisa Cannada, MD
We are honored to welcome Dr. Lisa Cannada, who is an orthopaedic trauma surgeon, mentor, and advocate for women pursuing careers in orthopedics or trauma surgery. She received the RJOS "She for She" award and the OTA DEI Award in 2022. She is also the co-founder of Speak Up Ortho, an initiative to increase awareness of bias, inequities, and harassment within orthopaedic surgery. Dr. Cannada will be the moderator for the Clinician Health, Wellness, & Career Transition session and will be speaking on Stress Management and the Use of Coaches. She will also moderate the faculty and resident breakout session.

Michael Tucker, MD
Dr. Michael Tucker is an orthopedic trauma surgeon. He currently serves as the Medical Director of Orthopedic Trauma at Prisma Health Richland Hospital. He is also a Clinical Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. Dr. Tucker will moderate the Best Practices & Innovative Techniques sessions.

Kevin Murr, MD
Dr. Kevin Murr is an orthopaedic trauma surgeion currently at Prisma Health. He also currently serves as a clinical associate professor of orthopedic surgery at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. Dr. Murr will be a panelist in the Rapid Fire Case Discussions.

Trent Stevens, MD
Dr. Trenton Stevens is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in trauma cases, including the treatment of complex musculoskeletal injuries, care for non-unions, mal-unions and complex fracture conditions. Dr. Stevens is the recipient of numerous honors and awards for leadership and scholarship, community and volunteer service. He coauthored numerous research projects, presentations and articles in peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Stevens will be a panelist in the Rapid Fire Case Discussions.

Melody Herman, MD
We are honored to have Dr. Melody Herman presenting. at SEFS 2023 on Regional Anesthesia and Compartment Syndrome. Dr. Herman is the Director of Regional Anesthesiology and Acute Pain Medicine with Scope Anesthesia at Atrium Health’s Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC. She is associate faculty for ASRA Pain Medicine and serves as the US representative for the European Society of Regional Anaesthesia and Pain Therapy.

Rachel Seymour, PhD
This year we are very excited to include Dr. Rachel Seymour in our faculty. Dr. Seymour is a Professor and Vice Chair for Research for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and the Atrium Health Musculoskeletal Institute and Associate Dean for Research at Wake Forest School of Medicine. Dr. Seymour will be speaking on improving self-efficacy during the Best Practices and Innovative Techniques session.

James Black, MD
Dr. Black is the current Director of Orthopaedic Trauma Service at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System, an ACS verified Level 1 trauma center serving upstate South Carolina. Dr. Black is also an active faculty member for AO Trauma North America and the Orthopaedic Trauma Association. Dr. Black will present on Pelvic Ramus Fractures during the Surgical Strategy Session.

Joseph Hsu, MD
Dr. Joseph Hsu is an orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in limb lengthening, deformity correction, osseointegration, and trauma. Dr. Hsu moderates our annual research thinktank on Thursday evening. He will be presenting Improvements in above-knee and below-knee amputation during the Surgical Strategy Session and facing off with Daryl Dillman on "Calcaneus Fractures - Sanders 4" in the faculty debates.

William Obremskey, MD
Dr. William Obremskey is a Professor of Orthopaedics, Director of Orthopaedic Trauma Fellowship and Director of Orthopaedic Trauma Research at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He has a clinical and research interest in Knee Dislocations, Scapula fractures and Necrotizing Fasciitis. He has a strong record of mentorship for orthopaedic trauma fellows, orthopaedic residents, and medical students. Dr. Obremskey will present "Acute Infection after ORIF - What do you do with the Hardware?" during the surgical strategy session and discuss transitioning to retirement during our Clinician Health, Wellness, and Career session.

Suman Medda, MD
Dr. Suman Medda specializes in orthopedic trauma surgery. He has clinical interests in fractures of the upper and lower extremities, post-traumatic reconstruction and hip arthroplasty. He is involved in research projects which attempt to improve outcomes of fracture treatments and surgeries. Along with being our local host this year, Dr. Medda will be facing off with Dr. Koerner in the faculty debate sessions on geriatric femoral neck fracture and with Dr. Norris on periprosthetic proximal femur fractures.

Daryl Dillman, MD
Dr. Daryl Dillman is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon based in Spartanburg, SC. Dr. Dillman has clinical interest in all trauma and the treatment of periprosthetic fractures. His research interests include classification and treatment of ballistic fractures as well as treatment of syndesmotic injuries. Dr. Dillman will debate Dr. Hsu during the faculty debates on Calcaneus Fractures - Sanders 4.

Kevin Haddix, MD
Dr. Kevin Haddix is an Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeon. He will be debating Dr. John Floyd on the treatment of Osteomyelitis in the unhealed fracture during the faculty debates.

Paul Matuszewski, MD
Dr. Paul Matuszewski is an orthopaedic surgeon joining us from the University of Kentucky Healthcare System. He will be presenting on wound breakdown in poor hosts during the small group discussion "When things go wrong".

Thomas Jones, MD
Dr. Thomas Jones is an orthopaedic surgeon and currently serves as a clinical assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine as well as a Major in the SC Air National Guard. Dr. Jones will be discussing Nonunion/Malunion during the small group discussion session "When things go wrong"

Erin Hofer, MD
Dr. Erin Hofer is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic traumatologist. Having published numerous peer-reviewed articles in major orthopaedic journals, she is currently working on several additional projects concerning traumatic fractures. Her research interests include complex fractures, anesthesia in orthopaedics, and postoperative activity protocols. Dr. Hofer will join the panel for the Rapid Fire Case Discussions on Saturday.

JD Adams, MD
Dr. Adams is an orthopaedic surgeon with fellowship training in Orthopardic Trauma. He has special interests within the field of orthopaedic trauma including pelvis and acetabular fractures, periarticular injuries, soft tissue management, hip arthroplasty, and multi-ligament knee reconstruction (knee dislocations). He also has a passion for medical missions and has spent time in Africa on multiple occasions. He will be a panelist during the rapid fire case discussions on Saturday.

Robert Palmer, MD
Dr. Robert Palmer is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in pediatrics. Dr. Palmer’s clinical areas of interest include spine surgery, sports injuries, hip dysplasia, bone and limb deformities, fractures, benign bone and soft tissue tumors, and orthopedic neuromuscular conditions like cerebral palsy. Dr. Palmer will be speaking on treatment of tibia spine avulsion fractures during the pediatric ortho focused session.

Brian Scannell, MD
Dr. Scannell specializes in pediatric orthopaedics and serves as the Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program Director at Carolinas Medical Center. He has a wide range of pediatric clinical interests including trauma, spine, hip disorders, and lower extremity deformity. Dr. Scannell will be presenting "Kids are malleable - what actually needs fixing?" during the pediatric ortho session.

Jennifer Bruggers, MD
Dr. Jennifer Bruggers is an orthopaedic surgeon joining us from Wellstar. She is the 2023 SEFS Planning Chair. Dr. Bruggers will be closing out the conference with final remarks.
