INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the 21st annual meeting of the Southeastern Fracture Symposium jointly sponsored by the Southeastern Fracture Consortium Foundation and the Wake Forest University Health Sciences Office of Continuing Medical Education and the Northwest Area Health Education Centers Program. The conference chairs represent Wake Forest University, Duke University, University of Virginia and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Schools of Medicine and Carolinas Medical Center. The Southeastern Fracture Consortium Foundation welcomes new orthopaedic individual memberships as well as institutional membership. The research consortium group is well recognized for its research endeavors through national conference presentations and publications. Nurses can attend any session. These objectives apply to all sessions intended for nurses.

At the conclusion of this symposium the learner should be better able to:

  • Define the role of the nurse and the principles of trauma nursing care involved in serving the multiply injured patient.
  • Discuss the principles and practices of orthopaedic research studies, valid hypotheses and outcomes.
  • Explain the rationale for the use of specialized and specific instruments and implants for operative treatment of fractures.
